TRIP TO MAROPENG AND THE STERKFONTEIN AND KROMDRAAI CAVES

The Cradle of Humankind, a UNESCO World Heritage Site

We took a day trip to the Cradle of Humankind in 2017 located about 50kms north-west of Johannesburg in the South African province of Gauteng at the Maropeng Centre where the Sterkfontein and  Kromdraai caves rich in fossil finds are located.

Decent into the heart of darkness of the caves.

Exploring the caves is hard work.

Ascend to the light and out of the caves.

With the Discovery of Homo Naledi an Ancient Human Specie in 2017 and the media still abuzz with the discovery we thought it would be right to pay our respects. On arrival, we were assigned a guide who escorted the group around the facility. We were then taken to the caves where many important fossil finds have been discovered throughout the years. Our trip culminated with lunch at The Tumulus restaurant, situated on the first floor of the Maropeng visitors centre. Will definitely make a return trip. An interesting and eye-opening trip to one of the 8 UNESCO WORLD HERITAGE sites in South Africa.
